Wired.com: Publishers Are Warming to Fan Fiction, But Can It Go Mainstream?
Kady Morrison’s debut novel, Juniper Lane, won’t be on store shelves for months, but already her fans number in the six figures. They’re familiar with her work from Archive of Our Own, a fanwork site where Morrison writes fanfic under the handle gyzym.
Her publisher, Big Bang Press, is well aware—in fact, it links to her Ao3 page directly from its website. For a conventional publisher to acknowledge, let alone link directly to, a writers’ fan fiction is unprecedented, but Big Bang specializes in original works by authors recruited from the fan-fiction community.
The overlap between the professional and fan literary communities is one of those uncomfortable secrets no one denies, but few discuss. Fan fiction is mostly published pseudonymously, and the stigma surrounding it often causes writers to keep their professional and fan identities carefully compartmentalized.
Literary publishing’s uneasy relationship with fan fiction has been complicated by the realization that fandom is a huge potential market—one stocked with both prolific authors and enthusiastic readers. But tapping that market is a dilemma few publishers seem quite prepared to engage.
That’s where Big Bang Press comes in.

On Writing: Snarky Characters
Snarky characters are huge right now. It seems like you can’t crack a book in any genre without cracking wise in the process. Certainly no love interest is complete without a few pointed barbs that he can fling out on command, and no Strong Female Character is worth her ‘spunk’ cred unless she can display some rapier wit.
Frankly, I have nothing against the snarky character. I think they’re fun, and the more the merrier. But it’s gotten to a point where many of these characters are just filling a ‘snarky trope’ instead of actually being witty. And that needs to stop. A good sarcastic character is the same as a good any-other-kind character; their traits need to make sense and be applied appropriately and with skill.
- Snark is Snappy – Witty exchanges should be short for two reasons. First, because that’s part of the humor. It’s the ‘cutting’ part of a cutting wit — it ‘cuts’ off the conversation. A few back and forths, especially to show that their conversational partner is just as quick, are fine. Drag it out, though, and you’re not longer cutting, you’re just having a Frankenstine conversation patched together out of different jokes. Second, you’re not as funny as you think you are. Not you, personally, everyone isn’t as funny as they think. A short witty conversation means you’ve got to pick the best of your best; the longer you go the more you have to dip into your B grade material.

Hey tumblr, have you ever thought to yourself, “dang it’d sure be cool to set a project in something other than the current times,” but when you go to look up references on google, all you get is a horrible historical pastiche of days gone by?
Well boy howdy, do I have a reference for you!
The Wishbook Web has scans of entire consumer catalogs from past decades, ranging from the early 30s to the late 80s. Each catalog has pages upon pages of reference of clothing, accessories, and shoes for all ages, as well as toys, gadgets, and all sorts of junk that you might buy for yourself or your loved ones. While the website exclusively has Christmas catalogs, the photos and illustrations show products that you could use year-round.
omg yay

A Writer’s Guide to Self-Publishing
Want to start self-publishing and need some practical tips? Here’s a guest post from Alice Kuipers on Wattpad:
When I was starting out as an author, not so very long ago, the main route to becoming published was to send work to agents, to publishers, to wait, to hope, to dream. For most writers, there were many, many rejections along the path to publishing, and I wrote lots of novels before my first published book finally found a home.
In the last few years, there’s been a huge shift in the publishing industry. Lots of authors still find traditional publishers for their books. But a huge, industrious group of authors have discovered the joys and challenges of self-publishing their writing. I have worked with several authors here in Saskatoon as they’ve honed and perfected their words getting them ready to self-publish and I’ve watched them with joy on the all-important night of their book launch.
There are some things to think about when you self publish. One terrific site for authors who want to self publish and who want everything I’m about to list already organized for them is Bibliocrunch. They provide editors, book designers, advice and ideas on budgeting. What more could you ask for!

Things to Do When You’re Anxious, Scared, or Just Need a Distraction
weave silk is my favorite and seed plant breeder is super fun.
I made these as a way to compile all the geographical vocabulary that I thought was useful and interesting for writers. Some descriptors share categories, and some are simplified, but for the most part everything is in its proper place. Not all the words are as useable as others, and some might take tricky wording to pull off, but I hope these prove useful to all you writers out there!
